Drones are the latest tool being used to survey commercial properties

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, the latest way to inspect commercial properties and to survey the parts of buildings that human beings cannot reach is the drone-mounted camera.

Our valuation team has begun using a microwave-sized helicopter to buzz the roofs and other inaccessible features of commercial properties for sale.

The team regularly carries out surveys on offices, shops and factories that can be worth millions of pounds. As the resulting reports are used for valuations by buyers and sellers as well as in agreements between commercial landlords and tenants, discovering all the areas of a building that may require work is crucial.

So the drone is invaluable when surveying difficult-to-access locations such as roofs.

“We are good but we are not supermen, and we can’t fly, so the drone gives us a huge advantage,” said Geoff Milnes, Head of Survey. “Because it’s so small and maneuverable, we can fly it into tight spaces using radio control and get close up pictures and videos of features that would otherwise be impossible to see without a lot of scaffolding and ladders.”
